What is suicidal Ideation?
Did you wake up this morning with a lingering sense of regret? Have you ever found yourself briefly contemplating veering towards a highway divider? Perhaps you’ve wondered about the reactions of your loved ones if you were no longer here. If these thoughts of passive self-harm or imagining a life without you have crossed your mind, it’s known as passive suicidal ideation, and it’s more common than you might imagine. In fact, over half of us experience such suicidal thoughts during our early adulthood. Suicidal ideation tends to intensify during periods of stress and significant life changes. It’s important to understand that these thoughts don’t necessarily reflect a true desire to end one’s life, but rather serve as expressions of feeling overwhelmed, intensely uncomfortable, or profoundly isolated, often coupled with a sense of not knowing how to escape these feelings.
Please, do not allow these thoughts to trick you into believing that death or suicide is better than life or that anyone else truly understands how dark it feels for you right now. Your brain is imbalanced and trapped in a place of despair and it is malfunctioning. This is basically a check the engine signal.
Suicidal Ideation: The Guise of A Faulty Brain
When darkness descends upon us, we might mistakenly believe that our destiny hinges on the actions of those around us. In such moments, we may engage in inner negotiations of suicidal ideation – for instance, thinking, “If a stranger offers a smile today, I won’t go home and reach for those pills.” We might indirectly communicate our feelings to loved ones, perhaps by expressing our affection, giving away our possessions, or providing them with glimpses of the darkness that envelopes us.
The challenge lies in the fact that predicting suicide is an immensely complex task. Even trained psychologists and professionals can miss the signs. This difficulty arises from the fact that a significant number of individuals experience passive suicidal ideation, making it challenging to discern when thoughts might transition into action. Furthermore, our society is accustomed to witnessing a wide range of emotions, from anger to sadness. People exhibit various emotional responses, such as expressing frustration in traffic, shedding tears while walking down the street, or becoming lost in thought during meetings. While most of these isolated incidents do not culminate in suicide attempts, some unfortunately do.
Moreover, many individuals may want to help but lack the necessary skills and knowledge to do so effectively. Consequently, we find ourselves grappling with an unsettling void, a sensation of invisibility within our suffering.
Suicide is Preventable
But here’s the catch, suicide is preventable! But, it is preventable by us, the people going down that dark road. We can overcome the darkness, but it requires us to take the first step to reach for a light. The scary part of this is, when you have enough energy to reach for the light, the likelihood of actually attempting and completing the task become more imminent.
There is this spark of a key moment, as soon as you can, please reach out to someone. Don’t worry about what happens next… Anything can be overcome if you still have air in your lungs. Who gives a shit what the neighbors would say about getting help? You think they will be kinder talking about a death by suicide? You get to chose the next chapter and there is an easier way to end the suffering than ending it. Now, maybe you are ready to make the move to reach for the light switch? But now you ask how? Thank you for reading to this point, I’m glad you are still with me…
